Variable and often confused with similar species. Adults which have not been reared from larvae on Broom (Cytisus scoparius) may be confused with A. atomella, A. heracliana or A. subpropinquella, and examination of genitalia is advised.

Usually shows two black spots and two white spots (often ringed by black) on each forewing.

Adults occur August to May, hibernating over winter.

Pre-1979, records were often confused with A. atomella.
